Today, it is looking more and more possible--arguably, likely--that we will discover, perhaps soon, clear evidence of life, however primitive, that arose utterly independent of life here on Earth. How such knowledge would be received, and what its consequences might be, are necessarily speculation, but is a fascinating question worth some looking into.
